2018 has been a milestone year for Zarraffa’s Coffee, marking 21 years in the coffee retail business.
In addition to the opening of the 85th Zarraffa’s store and the 50th drive thru location, the Aussie-owned company undertook a mammoth move, relocating the national headquarters from Helensvale to a brand new, purpose-built location, spanning 5.4 hectares in Eagleby.
As part of the National Franchise Conference held last week, the company celebrated its over two decades in business with an informal birthday bash, acknowledging the efforts and support from head office staff, suppliers and, most importantly, its franchisees.
From a single cafe in Southport on the Gold Coast, Zarraffa’s Coffee has evolved into an award-winning enterprise and now serves an ‘individually perfect cup of coffee’ at over 85 locations across Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales.
Zarraffa’s Coffee Founder and Managing Director, Kenton Campbell, opened the first store in 1997 with the vision of becoming Australia and New Zealand’s number one provider of specialty coffee.
”It’s been an incredible ride so far,” enthused Kenton. “When I was operating coffee carts back in the early ‘90’s in Seattle I couldn’t have dreamed I would be here today.”
From opening the first store at Australia Fair Shopping Centre on the Gold Coast in 1997 to expanding into franchising in October 2001, it was the move into drive thrus in 2009 that elevated Zarraffa’s operation, providing customers with quality coffee and added convenience.
“Our drive thru model sets the standard in the market and we’re proud to offer options to our customers; giving them their time back in convenience, while not sacrificing on quality.”
The name Zarraffa’s (zar-raf-fas) comes from the Arabic word ‘Zarafa‘, meaning ‘Giraffe’, and was inspired by the Masai Giraffe that typically inhabits the savannahs of Kenya and Ethiopia, the origin of coffee.
During a visit to Africa in 2012, Kenton felt there was a lot to learn from the community-based conservation efforts he witnessed first-hand and believed that he could contribute something in return.
“I believe in the words of the Body Shop Founder Anita Roddick – it’s about ‘trade, not aid’,” he said. ”We’re taking a commodity from the community, so I’d like to give something back on several levels.”
Since then Kenton and Zarraffa’s have supplied funds to build a nursery in Meru, Kenya, including the money for seedlings and a new facility where the coffee is processed.
In addition, Kenton and his wife Rachel established the Zarraffa’s Foundation, which now supports a growing number of local and international charity and community efforts.
With expansion planned in key geographical areas of New South Wales, Western Australia and Victoria next year, Zarraffa’s Coffee hopes to introduce its unique blend of coffee to a whole new legion of coffee lovers.
“The business has changed my life as well as that of our partners – our franchisees – who have the means and tools to make their business dreams come true,” said Kenton.
Kenton said that ultimately it was down to the franchisees and their staff who work diligently on and in the business seven days a week, often up before dawn and late into the night.
“Many people say you can’t run a successful business without good staff and good product and this is absolutely true.”
“It is also thanks to the loyalty of our customers; the ones who keep the love and passion for Zarraffa’s going, that I am very appreciative of. Without them, we would still be just one store in one shopping centre.”
The experienced team from Zarraffa’s Coffee Warwick were last night crowned 2018 Franchisee of the Year at the National Franchise Conference.
Staged on the Gold Coast at RACV Royal Pines Resort, Zarraffa’s Golden Zee Awards recognised the top performers across the almost 90-strong, Australian-owned and operated franchise group.
Accepting the top gong was mother and daughter duo, Tracey Slater and Danielle Cook, whose record of excellence was affirmed by their previous win back in 2016.
Zarraffa’s Coffee Managing Director, Kenton Campbell, believes it is both Danielle and Tracey’s passion for what they do that produces such consistently great results.
“These women have worked hard to build a following through repeatedly great service and a strong staff culture. It’s hard to fault their love of what they do, and the proof is definitely in the coffee!”
The Award recognises excellence in business and the Warwick team beat out a large number of stores, proving that coffee culture is alive and well in regional areas.
“It’s a great validation of the universal love of coffee and the way that we craft it for our customers,” said Kenton. “We are looking at widespread expansion in regional NSW and Queensland areas and know that people across the country have a love of a well-made beverage.”
The duo who opened their store in 2011, made the decision to relocate back to Warwick to open what was then the company’s 5th drive thru location.
“We have six generations of family in the vicinity and love what we do,” said Danielle.
The team enjoy an easy partnership that has been the lynchpin of their success, as it’s not every mother/ daughter relationship that can create a prosperous business.
“We are both used to working hard and long hours and, when we set out on this journey with Zarraffa’s, we came to the decision that if we were going to be doing the hard yards we’d much prefer to do it for ourselves. It’s been an incredible ride so far.”
The Darling Downs produced another win on the night with the Toowoomba North store named Rookie of the Year.
For the second year running Franchisees, former store manager Ashley Byers and Jordan Wyborn, have taken out the Rookie of the Year Award for exceptional performance.
“The boys are excellent operators and exemplify the pathway from store manager to Franchisee ownership in our company,” said Kenton. “The just keep improving year on year.”

With over 85 stores across Queensland and Western Australia, Zarraffa’s Coffee is making inroads into New South Wales with a new store opening in Coffs Harbour.
As part of a strategic plan to introduce the brand to southerners, the Queensland born specialty coffee company will expand its network in the area and open a drive thru site at 2 Bray Street, on the north side of Coffs Harbour.
The new store will service the coastal holiday destination’s city centre and surrounding suburbs and communities, led by franchisees Paul and soon-to-be wife Melissa who recently relocated from the Gold Coast.
Paul and Melissa expressed that they were excited to be taking the plunge with this new adventure as it was a long-term vision for the couple to own their own Zarraffa’s Coffee franchise.
“We are both avid patrons of the brand and wanted to invest our life into a new challenge that we were passionate about, so when the opportunity came up, we knew it was a perfect fit and took the opportunity to move with open arms,” he said.
“Being part of Zarraffa’s is like being welcomed into a big family, we respect the vision, quality product and opportunity that comes with it, and look forward to giving it all we’ve got.”
After serving a distinguished career in the Government’s Department of Defence for almost 30-years, Paul and Melissa, who switched gears from the Health Care industry, plan to share their love of coffee with the local community.
“Coffee is a huge part of our lives and we can’t wait to offer that individualised premium coffee experience to our customers,” Paul said.
“Our store is located in a prime position on the highway and conveniently suited for commuters of both directions to stop in or grab their coffee on-the-go.”
As the third store to open under the 21-year-old company’s New South Wales expansion plans, Zarraffa’s Coffee Managing Director, Kenton Campbell said he was thrilled to have such engaged operators ‘flying the flag’ in Coffs.
“We have been eyeballing a lot of potential New South Wales sites and territories for some time, and to see it come to fruition over the past 12 months has been exciting for the entire Zarraffa’s Group,” said Kenton.
“We enjoy a lot of love in Queensland and in WA, and we are keen to start winning over fans as we open across New South Wales, one cup at a time.”
Zarraffa’s Coffee Coffs Harbour drive thru officially opens its doors to the public on Monday 15th October, and will employ up to thirty locals who will be trained in store.
“It’s been a dream turned reality for us and we’re so excited to be bringing the Zarraffa’s Coffee brand to the Coffs coast community,” said Paul.

Hard work and a foundation of great coffee have paid off for Zarraffa’s Coffee franchisees, Nick and Kelly Daswani who will open Zarraffa’s 87th store in Eagleby on September 24th.
After the ongoing success of their Beenleigh Store that opened in 2012, it was time for the dynamic husband and wife duo to take on the challenge of a fast-paced drive thru store, capping off a stellar 12 months as the incumbent Zarraffa’s Franchisees of the Year.
Mr Daswani said opening and running the Beenleigh store was an incredible learning experience and he is excited to embark on this next chapter, providing great coffee to Eagleby residents.
“We’ve long been interested in growing as part of the Zarraffa’s family and when the Eagleby site came up we knew it would be the perfect next step in our small business journey,” said Daswani.
“From washing dishes and steaming lattes eight and a half years ago, originally working in another Zarraffa’s store, to standing on the stage as Franchisee of the Year in 2017, the journey with Zarraffa’s Coffee has been a dream come true,” he said.
The new team at Eagleby Drive Thru will consist of some fresh faces, accompanied by a small number of staff from the Beenleigh Store, to provide experience and consistency.
“Our plan is to take the family environment we’ve cultivated at our Beenleigh Store over the past 6 years and replicate that culture at Eagleby,” he said.
The new store is located at Eagleby Service Centre, corner Brigade Drive and River Hills Road, along the bustling Gold Coast/ Brisbane growth corridor.
Zarraffa’s Managing Director, Kenton Campbell, said that the location is critical to the success of any new drive thru site, but that it was also equally important to have a highly trained team who love what they do.
“Nick and Kelly’s passion for the brand, for our coffee culture and their enthusiasm to serve up great coffee each and every day, is why they were given the company’s top award,” he said.
It is also reflected in the recent win of Nick and Kelly’s Beenleigh Baristas, who were earlier this month crowned Zarraffa’s Barista Team of the Year in a challenge where baristas from across the Zarraffa’s group went head to head in coffee making expertise.
“It is crucial that as a company we continue to move forward and support the goals of our franchisees, who reinvest over and over in our brand – in time, energy and commitment to our system,” said Kenton.
“It is because of people like Nick, Kelly and their team that we will be able to keep delivering great coffee and service in even more areas of the country, for years to come.”
