From Kenya to Peru: Growing with Local Communities

The noticeable difference in our Single Origin beans can be defined by one word: flavour.

Single Origin coffee is grown within a distinct geographic location, meaning either a single farm or one country. Therefore, it is influenced by specific natural attributes such as climate, landscape, and altitude where the beans were grown.

Each bean delivers a bespoke flavour, providing taste profiles that might sometimes get lost in a blend.

Single Origin coffee is synonymous with a premium coffee experience, and customers get to play a role in the pursuit of higher-quality products and ethical business practices.

Single Origin is more than just coffee

At Zarraffa's Coffee, we believe in more than just a cup of coffee. We understand that the communities where our coffee is grown are integral to our success and growth, and we strive to support those local economies and ensure they thrive.

We have long nurtured a 'trade, not aid' relationship with our growers by funding seedling nurseries to produce robust coffee crops, which allows the local community to thrive. In addition, providing agronomy resources, such as training and advice on best practices, enables farmers to increase the production of quality coffee beans and use these resources for other crops.

The PERU AYNI PROJECT

One of our latest project incorporates the ancient Inca philosophy AYNI - today for you, tomorrow for me – and our goal is to create sustainable farming practices and empower smallholder farmers in Peru. We are providing agronomy resources, such as training and advice on best practices, to help farmers increase the production of quality coffee beans.

As part of this training and advice, Zarraffa’s has also provided the local growers with drying beds and housing for their stock. Previously their coffee crops were dried on the floor. Now with the coffee being elevated on beds, it produces a better quality end-product, with minimal foreign artefacts, and is also better ergonomically for the growers and their families.

Helping conserve the environment

In addition to supporting communities, Zarraffa's supports the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy located next to the Meru Coffee Co-op, Kenya, where we source some of our specialty coffee beans.

Lewa serves as a safe refuge for the critically endangered black rhino, the endangered Grevy's zebra, and the elephant, lion, giraffe, wild dog, and other iconic wildlife species in Kenya. Zarraffa's acts as a significant financial contributor to Lewa to ensure the continued conservation of the native wildlife in Northern Kenya.
