Coffee Is Just the Beginning

At Zarraffa’s, our ethos has always been “more than just a cup of coffee”.

It’s a craft. It’s connection. It’s the quiet moment that starts the day. The familiar comfort shared between our customers and baristas. It’s the daily ritual that shaped our brand from the very beginning.  From the creation of our logo, to becoming Australia’s leading specialty coffee company, our purpose has always been to be more than just a cup of coffee. At first, that meant redefining what specialty coffee could be. But as we grew, so did the meaning behind every cup. Over time, a deeper purpose began to take root, one tied to the planet, our wider impact and the belief that our actions can create lasting change. Coffee built our foundation. Purpose is shaping future.

This is the story about our why, a defining chapter that shaped our conservation journey and changed our brand forever. This is Coffee for the Rhinos.

A SPARK THAT STARTED IT ALL

By the mid-2000s, Zarraffa’s was thriving, yet something felt unfinished. Kenton Campbell, our Founder and Managing Director, often spoke about feeling like something was missing, that opening another store no longer fulfilled him in the way it once did.

He sensed the brand was meant for more than expansion alone. After a life-altering health scare, that feeling sharpened into clarity. He wanted Zarraffa’s to stand for something bigger than a thriving business, something that created lasting impact. That belief led him to Kenya, to the farmers who grow our coffee and to the wildlife that surrounds their communities.

Where a Cup of Coffee Becomes Something Bigger

In Kenya, Kenton saw the full story behind every bean. Farmers shared how coffee shaped their future and supported their families. Communities showed how conservation protected not only wildlife, but their livelihoods. And through the work of local groups, he witnessed the fight to save the black and white rhino from the brink of extinction. Their motivation wasn’t just environmental; it was cultural, economic, and deeply personal. It became unmistakably clear, when wildlife thrives, so do the communities who protect them and so does coffee.

How Coffee for the Rhinos Became Our Turning Point

Coffee for the Rhinos emerged from this realisation. It began as an initiative to support rhino conservation and soon grew into something much more, a bridge between our customers in Australia and our sister communities in Kenya.

Coffee for the Rhinos didn’t mark the beginning of our conservation story, it marked an evolution on a global scale. Through partners like Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Il Ngwesi Community Conservation and the Ntongoro Coffee Co-Op, the initiative raised funds, awareness, and connection that reached far beyond a single project. It revealed that our customers weren’t just buying a cup of coffee, they were supporting an ecosystem and chain of impact that stretched from Australia to Kenya.

Reflecting on this shift, Kenton captured the heart of what Coffee for the Rhinos had become:

“It's not going to be easy to get people to understand that we don’t just see them as a consumer purchasing a cup of coffee, but rather as a part of a greater community that is willing to challenge themselves to something that in the long term is bigger than any one of us. Not only here in Australia but also abroad in our sister community in Kenya.

In that moment, the true power of connection and the responsibility it carries became unmistakable.

A Purpose Became Clear

Coffee for the Rhinos became a catalyst. It crystallised values that had long existed within our brand and expanded them into a global conservation purpose. It showed us that supporting coffee farmers meant supporting the environments they depend on. And protecting those environments meant protecting the wildlife that defines them.

We realised conservation wasn’t an add-on, a campaign, or a single project. It was a responsibility, woven into our origins, our relationships, and the future we aim to create. A responsibility that now sits at the heart of who we are. Everything Kenton witnessed - the farmers, the rhinos, the resilience of Kenyan communities needed to be shared. Not as a campaign, but as a story of purpose and hope, a story worth telling and connecting our customers to.

From Initiative to Identity

What began as a spark in our conservation journey has grown into a defining part of who we are at Zarraffa’s and the journey we invite our customers to share with us. Over the past three decades in business, our brand has evolved into one driven by conscious purpose-led action. Conservation isn’t something we do on the side, it’s a thread woven through every decision and every cup we serve.

In Australia, this commitment is reflected in our longstanding relationships with Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors. Globally, our support extends to conservation and community partners in Kenya. Through our Single Origin program, we champion a “trade, not aid” approach, building meaningful relationships that uplift coffee-growing communities and create long-term opportunity and stability. Together, these partnerships help protect wildlife, support community-led conservation, preserve culture and safeguard the future of coffee-growing regions.

Today, there is no corner of Zarraffa’s untouched by this purpose. Every choice, from sourcing, to partnerships, to the stories we share contributes to protecting wildlife, supporting communities, and creating meaningful impact both locally in our backyard and around the world.

This is the evolution of our conservation purpose, more than ten years of growth, learning, and action that transformed a single initiative into a formative part of our identity.

Where We’re Heading

The exciting part is, our story is still being written. What began as a meaningful shift in our perspective has grown into a defining part of our future.

As we look ahead, our purpose remains clear – to use coffee as a catalyst for positive change, for people, for wildlife, and for the planet.

In the years to come, we’ll continue building on the foundations we’ve created. That means strengthening our conservation commitments, expanding opportunities within coffee-growing communities, and championing sustainable, responsible growth across every part of our business.

Most importantly, we will keep bringing our customers with us on this journey. Because every cup has the potential to contribute to something greater. Conservation has been at the heart of Zarraffa’s Coffee since the brand’s inception in 1996, with initiatives focused on wildlife protection and environmental stewardship.

Looking ahead, Zarraffa’s mission to protect wildlife and their environments continues. In 2024, we established a 10 year partnership with Wildlife Warriors through our ongoing collaboration with Australia Zoo.

This collaboration represents the brand’s largest conservation initiative yet, pledging $500,000 to support vital conservation efforts.

Through Wildlife Warriors, Zarraffa’s have committed to supporting the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which continues to lead the charge in black rhino conservation for this iconic species in East Africa. Ol Pejeta was chosen to house 20 black rhinos, a population that has since grown into East Africa’s largest population of black rhinos with 182 protected in their care, playing a huge role in conservation for the species.

The next chapter of Zarraffa’s is one of deeper impact and continued learning. And while our journey will evolve, one belief will always remain constant, the belief that shaped us from the very beginning:

At Zarraffa’s, coffee has always been more than just a cup of coffee.
