A Taste of Indonesia’s Highlands: Zarraffa's Java Kamandaka Single Origin Coffee
OUR EIGHTEENTH SINGLE ORIGIN RELEASE CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF JAVA. INTRODUCING, THE INDONESIAN JAVA KAMANDAKA.
Bright, citric and birthed from volcanic soil, the Indonesian Java Kamandaka Single Origin coffee is a sip that tells a story of balance between people, planet and tradition.
Grown in the misty Sunda Highlands of West Java, this limited-edition release is alive with tangerine and melon rind, layered with sweet red fruits, chocolate notes and a subtle blackberry finish. Scoring an 86 on the cupping scale it’s a vibrant expression of Indonesia’s coffee craft, each sip revealing the depth of its origin.
The Java Kamandaka bean is more than a taste experience – it’s a symbol of renewal. In the hills surrounding Bandung, the capital of West Java, years of deforestation once left the slopes bare and vulnerable to landslides. Local farmers and conservation groups set out to change that, believing coffee could protect both the forest and the communities who depend on it. They began restoring the land by planting Arabica beans within the forest’s edge where the trees offer natural shade, the perfect environment for these beans to thrive. Creating harmony between conservation and cultivation. As the trees take root, the soil strengthens, the forest thrives, and every harvest brings new life to both the land and the livelihoods it sustains.
This approach to coffee farming echoes Zarraffa’s own philosophy, that great coffee and conservation belong together. From the forests of West Java to the initiatives we support here at home, every bean tells a story of protecting what matters - people, wildlife and the places that sustain them. The Java Kamandaka stands as a shared expression of that purpose, coffee that gives back to the earth that grows it.
Java’s name has long been tied to coffee. Since the 1600s, the island has been at the centre of global coffee history, being one of the first places outside of Ethiopia and Arabia where coffee was cultivated. When disease devastated much of Java’s crops in the 1800s, small farming communities tucked within the Sunda Highlands refused to let the legacy fade. They nurtured what remained, keeping the island’s coffee culture alive through perseverance and passion.Today, Java Kamandaka stands as a continuation of that spirit, a modern expression of resilience shaped by centuries of dedication.
Our eighteenth single origin release perfectly captures the story of a land and people, where every bean carries the weight of history and the promise of renewal.
