World Giraffe Day: The Story That Inspired Zarraffa’s Coffee

When people think of Zarraffa's Coffee, chances are they picture a giraffe.

You'll find it on our logo, our cups, our stores and woven throughout our brand. But while the giraffe is one of the most recognisable parts of Zarraffa's Coffee, many people don't know the story behind how it got there. This World Giraffe Day, we're sharing the story of the animal that inspired our name, shaped our identity and continues to influence our commitment to conservation more than 30 years later.

The Story Behind the Name

Long before there were Z Cards, Fusions, drive thrus, and morning Zarraffa’s Coffee runs, Founder and Managing Director Kenton Campbell was focused on one thing: creating a coffee company that stood apart.

As he developed the brand, several animals were considered.

"The first thing I thought of with this company was the brand; I had a monkey, a rhino and a giraffe," he recalls.

"Monkey and coffee company didn't seem right, rhino didn't fit and I have always loved giraffes, but that on its own didn't seem right."

Everything changed when he discovered that Zarafa is the Arabic word for giraffe.

Suddenly, the pieces fell into place.

The name was unique, memorable and connected to an animal that had long captured his imagination. It also reflected the vision he had for the business from the very beginning.

"I wanted to create a company that stood giraffe-like, head and shoulders above the rest."

30 years later, that philosophy still guides us today.

For us, standing head and shoulders above the rest has never been about being the biggest. It's about delivering quality coffee, creating meaningful customer experiences and making a positive impact in the communities we're part of.

A Meaningful Connection to Coffee Origins

The giraffe's connection to Zarraffa's Coffee extends beyond our name and logo.

Masai giraffes roam the savannahs of East Africa, including regions renowned for producing some of the world's most celebrated coffee. These landscapes helped inspire our signature African Masai Coffee blend and continue to remind us of the rich coffee-growing heritage that sits behind every cup.

These regions have helped shape coffee culture around the world through their exceptional growing conditions, rich farming traditions and distinctive flavour profiles.

For us, the giraffe represents not only our identity, but also a connection to the origins of coffee itself.

It's a reminder that every cup has a story, and many of those stories begin in the communities and landscapes where coffee is grown.

Conservation Beyond the Cup

Over the years, our connection to the giraffe has evolved into something much bigger than a brand symbol.

Today, it forms part of our ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation through our long-standing partnerships that allow us to contribute to wildlife conservation in meaningful ways.

Through our relationship with Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors, we’ve had the privilege of supporting initiatives that help protect wildlife and educate future generations about the importance of caring for the natural world.

Along the way, we’ve shared some particularly special moments. One of those was helping name Zarafa, the giraffe at Australia Zoo. Named after the same inspiration behind Zarraffa's Coffee, Zarafa represents a connection between our brand, our customers and the wildlife conservation efforts taking place right here in Australia.

More recently, we were honoured to help welcome Zarraffaroo, an Eastern Grey Kangaroo joey whose name celebrates another chapter in our ongoing work with Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors.

These moments are a reflection of a relationship built on shared values and a belief that businesses can play a meaningful role in supporting the protection of wildlife for generations to come.

Because for us, conservation has always been about supporting something bigger than ourselves and helping create a positive impact wherever we can.

Celebrating the Animal That Inspired It All

World Giraffe Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the journey that began with a simple idea and an animal that captured Kenton’s imagination.

The giraffe inspired our name, our identity and our ambition to build something different, something that stood head and shoulders above the rest. It also inspired a deeper connection to conservation, community and the regions that helped shape our story.

30 years later, that original inspiration continues to influence who we are and what we stand for.
